Languages (Core French)
The Languages Department at St. Mary's College offers Core French at both the Applied and Academic level in Grade 9 and for those students wishing to continue in their French studies, Grade 10-12 Core French is offered at the Academic level. If you take French right through to Grade 12, you will have the opportunity to challenge the DELF test which is a French language proficiency test. The successful candidates then receives an internationally recognized certificate from France stating the level of proficiency in the language.
The DELF Initiative
In recent years, provincial initiatives have taken place using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR) to inform practice in FSL. The CEFR provides a comprehensive overview of competencies that Franch language learners need to develop in order to communicate and interact effectively. It presents levels of language proficiency, starting at the basic level A1, continuing to A2, B1 and B2 (which is considered independent). Our languages department will continue to prepare and encourage our students from Grade 9 through to Grade 12 at which time they will be able to apply and challenge the DELF testing. successful candidates will receive a Diplome d’études en langue française which is internationally recognized.
